Rotating LaserWhat is a Rotating Construction Laser (Rotary Laser)?

A construction laser is a level which emits one or more laser beams through its rotating aperture(s) to create a level reference plane. They can be used outdoors or indoors.

Locate the laser beam by moving the receiver up or down until you see the center line and hear a constant tone.

How does a Laser Work?

Lasers work by extending the level reference point through the use of a laser beam. As the laser beacon rotates (or spins), it generates a 360 degree level plane over a large diameter range.

The concentric red circles represent the 360 degree level horizontal plane generated by the rotating laser.

What are the Different Types of Rotating Lasers?

LaserMark Wizard Rotary LasersRotating lasers come in various types. They are mainly manual or automatic leveling; horizontal or split-beam (horizontal and vertical) styles.

Manual Level Lasers:

Setup of a manual level laser requires the operator to manually level the unit by using the units' screws and bubble vials.

Self-Leveling Lasers:

Self-leveling lasers automatically find and maintain level within a specified range. Only rough leveling is required upon setup.

Split-Beam Lasers:

These lasers emit simultaneous horizontal and vertical beams to establish both level and plumb reference lines.

Horizontal Lasers:

A horizontal beam laser emits a single horizontal beam from its rotating beacon.

The lasers listed above are available in different models with various features and attachments to fit your job requirements. Added features may include variable rotation speed, beam scanning (chalkline), grade capability, remote controls, rechargeable battery packs/chargers and others. Attachments may include a wall / ceiling mount, Laser Platforms, or vertical trivet for interior work, or additional rods and detectors for multiple outdoor setups. Many sizes and styles of Tripods and Measuring Rods with different increments (feet, inch, meters, cm, etc) are also available.

Benefits of using a laser:

Save time. Lasers complete jobs quickly and accurately over large work areas.

Save Labor. Lasers perform with just one person.

What is the right laser for you?

Consider your job requirements ...

1. How large is your job site?

The answer to this will determine the range required.

2. What accuracy is needed?

All lasers have accuracy tolerances based on the lasers' design, range and distance involved. For very precise work, a more accurate self-leveling laser may be required, even for short range applications.

3. Will it be necessary to measure vertical angles?

Some lasers are designed to perform horizontal applications only. If vertical, plumbing, aligning or measuring is involved, a laser with vertical capabilities will be required.

4. Is automatic leveling important?

Self-leveling lasers are easier and faster to set up and maintain accuracy on the job.

5. Do you have power on the job site?

Battery operated lasers offer portability and do not require additional power unless recharging or replacement is needed.

Outdoor Applications: Indoor Applications:
Basic surveys
Masonry alignment
Check Elevations
Align Fences, posts and decks
Establishing grades
Site layout
Contour farming/drainage
Align and plumb walls
Level floors
Install drop ceilings/soffits
Check door/window heights
Install chair rails, wainscoting
Align shelves, cabinets & trim

Using a rotating laser & detector, one person can level and check forms at the desired height. Split-Beam lasers give you a precise 90 degree angle for squaring floor and wall tiles.

Lasers with slope capability can set grade for proper drainage and irrigation. Attach your laser to a wall/ceiling mount for easy drop ceiling installation.

Lasers easily check and level posts and beams on decks, fences and porches. Set up your laser on a tripod for easy installation and alignment of cabinets, chair rails, etc.
