Air Conditioning and Mechanical Trades
Preparing for the Contractor's License Examination
A Practical Exam Study Guide - Updated August 2008

By John Gladstone

Air Conditioning and Mechanical Trades - deals principally with solutions to mechanical contractor examination problems. Its aim is to assist practicing contractors and journeyman mechanics in successfully passing any examination anywhere.

For those who are skilled and capable in the mechanical trades, but have not been in a classroom for many years, Mr. Gladstone advises how, where, when and what to study. In easy-to-read, concise language he analyzes the approach, tactics and strategy required to beat the test writers. He tells how exams are written, and what you should know in order to pass - in brief, the inside story.

The book includes over 575 actual questions and answers from previous exams covering air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, service and maintenance, sheet metal and ventilation, insulation, pressure and process piping, and test and balance. A special section explains the national codes and gives you better insight into NFPA 90, 90A and 90B, ASHRAE B9.1, ASME B31, and the Power Piping and Pressure Vessel Code, as well as the ASNI Scheme for the Identification of Piping Systems. Thoroughly dealt with are the special problems involving load estimating, psychrometrics, cooling tower and pump selection, cooling tower piping, duct sizing and layout, and pipe fitting.

Another special section concerns OSHA as it applies to mechanical contractors. Each chapter covers a specific topic area in a well-organized arrangement so that the basic equations (psychrometrics, heat load, air and water flow, etc.) are presented in a total, integrated manner with tables for ready reference. You'll find much helpful, hard-to-find information on general safety requirements, rigging, business and management - reading a statement, and contractor law. These, along with a handy mathematics refresher, are all scaled to the needs of preparing for the exam. The appendix is packed with vital tables, charts and conversion data providing quick answers for everyday field use as well as an excellent reference source for the open-book portion of the exam.

This book - the first on the subject - fills a long-existing need. It will be welcomed by engineers, contractors, mechanics, teachers and students interested in passing the contractor license examination in any state or municipality.
